  • DAY ONE

    53km + 600m

    Shake Out Ride

Day one on any Escape is about arriving from the airport and preparing for the week ahead.

Our first ride of the week takes us west of the city, into the rural tracks and trails Girona offers. The route will give you a true taste of all the different types of gravel riding we'll face over the next 6 days!

  • DAY TWO

    75km + 800m

    Banyoles

We leave Girona on quiet backroads before joining a network of smooth gravel tracks through farmland, forests and rolling Catalan countryside. The highlight is the stunning passage along Lake Banyoles, where turquoise water and peaceful trails create one of the most scenic sections of the ride. From there, the route continues through hidden villages and shaded woodland paths, mixing fast gravel with gentle climbs and flowing descents.

  • DAY THREE

    101km + 1100m

    Santa Vall

Today we head south west of Girona. By now you'll have a real sense of the diversity in the off road riding outside the city. Today we go more remote, into the wilds, away from people, towns and villages. A coffee stop in Sant Coloma de Farners is our half way point, before we head north, back towards the city on quiet, rural tracks through forests and open wilderness.

  • DAY FOUR

    55km + 400m

    The Rest Day

Day four on any BoC Escape is a rest day. A shorter day to allow us to recover a little ahead of 2 more big days. We once again head west, onto old railway lines and inner city gravel trails, on the flattest ride of any BoC Escape to date! In the afternoon, you'll have free time to explore Girona, take in the cafe culture and see the sights of the city off the bike.

  • DAY FIVE

    107km + 1500m

    The Queen Stage

On every BoC Escape, we declare one ride as the Queen Stage. It’s usually the ride we deem to be the most epic of all the rides we’ll face.

We ride out into the Catalan hinterland, in search of the toughest climb of the week. Els Angels, off road. Els Angels is the favourite road climb of the many Pro cyclists who live in the area. Today we face the steep, technical off road version of the climb on a rolling route that will test our bike handling and gravel climbing skills for sure!

  • DAY SIX

    110km + 1000m

    The Coast Loop

For our final ride, we head east, to the coast, through quiet rural Catalan Countryside, narrow trails and through ancient villages and towns. A lunch stop in L'Estartit is our destination, before we ride back along the river, heading west towards Girona. Save some energy for the final climb back in Girona! After the ride, it's time to pack up the bikes and enjoy our final dinner in the Old Town, with a week of amazing riding in the legs.

Ride / Recover / Relax

The BoC Girona Gravel Escape is based just a couple of minutes walk from Old Town Girona. It's place in the city offers us an amazing opportunity to experience the very best rides, cafes, coffee, and restaurants in Catalonia. You'll spend all 6 nights of the Escape in the same hotel, allowing you to think of nothing but riding, relaxing, and recovering.

Authentic Catalan Cuisine in Old Town Girona

For the first time ever on a BoC Escape, we're not including dinner at our base hotel. Why? Because Girona has a simply incredible Old Town just a few minutes away from our hotel, packed with amazing restaurants. So each night, we'll book our group into a recommended independent restaurant, allowing you to try the amazing Catalan Cuisine in the area in an authentic way.

Supported by BoC Ride Leaders

From the moment you arrive at Girona Airport, you will have nothing to think about other than riding. Every ride is led by 2-3 BoC Guides, who will ride with you at all times. Our support van will be on the road with us at all times to provide food, water, and mechanical or rider support whenever its required.

6 Nights Accommodation

Our base for the Girona Gravel Escape is Hotel Ultonia in Girona. Located just outside the old town, the hotel offers secure bike storage, excellent breakfasts, spacious rooms and so much more to help us make the very most of the Girona Escape.

IS THIS ESCAPE FOR ME?

Our Escapes are designed to be very challenging. They're adventures, not races. You don't need to be race fit, but you do need to be prepared to be challenged physically.

Our Escapes are not designed for beginners to cycling. Typically our Tours are ridden by riders who train year round, averaging at least 5 hours per week on the bike, year round.

On our Escapes, you will ride more hours than a typical pro rider during a week on the Tour de France. You will climb as much elevation as a Grand Tour week too. So here's some things you should be capable of:

1. Riding up to 5-7 hours per day, on back to back days. Being able to recover and go again day after day.

2. Climbing up to 4000m per day, on back to back days. In reality, very few people can train for this, but being used to climbing gradients of around 7% for around 90 minutes without stopping is key.

3. Basic bike self sufficiency. You should be able to change your own punctures, assemble and disassemble your own bike on arrival and departure. Our team are there to help, but you should have the ability to be self sufficient should our team be a few KM's away mid ride.

4. Self sufficient riding. We have 2-3 ride guides on every Escape, with up to 20 guests. So at some stage, you will find yourself riding alone. You must be comfortable riding alone, in potentially extreme conditions such as high altitude, heat, cold, and rain.

Our support van is available on most escapes (Excludes Mallorca) but this is not a taxi service. It's designed to rescue riders in the event of injury, mechanical problems or extreme fatigue. If you're unable to complete an entire route due to your physical fitness, we may suggest you retrace your ride back to the hotel, rather than ride in the support van all day, depending on your location at the time, and the weather conditions.

5. Ride in a small group. We try to ride together in groups where possible, typically on flat roads to the starts of the climbs. So having the ability to ride in groups helps.

6. Being able to follow routes. You MUST have a GPS head unit or means of following a route on your bike. This is to ensure you follow our planned, safe routes, and to avoid getting lost, and delaying the group whilst we try and find you.

Completing a BoC Escape is an amazing feeling. The sense of accomplishment is huge. But it helps to prepare for our Escapes physically, as you'll enjoy it so much more.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ'S

How fit do I need to be?

BoC Escapes are not races, they're an adventure. We ride socially, with a cafe/coffee stop midway through each ride.

That said, BoC Escapes are tough. You'll ride 6 back to back big days with up to 2100m (7000ft) of climbing per day in Girona.

We would suggest you should be capable of climbing for at least 90 minutes at a gradient of 7% without stopping. Average speeds are very difficult to gauge, but most riders on our Escapes will average at least 10kph per hour (6mph) on a climb of 7%. Some will ride much quicker of course, but you are free to ride at your own pace.

We would suggest the trip is for intermediate or above level riders, or those with at least some experience of riding in the mountains and a decent level of fitness. At no point will any rider be left behind on their own for too long, as our guides will be on the road with you at all times and will always be close by.

We aim to ride as a group, although on long climbs we usually split up, before regrouping at the summits, or cafe stops if the temperatures at the summits are too cold.

Of course, some riders will be faster than others, but we try to keep any waiting times between the first and last riders reaching the summits to a minimum. You are free to ride at your own speed. This is not a race. It's a chance to test your own legs at your own pace.

What Gravel Bike Should I Bring?

Girona gravel is diverse. There are some fast, flowing wide open gravel roads with small, sandy gravel, and then there's some forest single track, which is more technical and requires more grip, with wider tyres.

We'd recommend bringing a gravel bike with wide range gearing. 1:1 Gearing is recommended, but not essential.

We recommend a 40mm - 50mm tyre, with a tubeless setup. As large parts of the route are off road, our support van cannot support every KM, so you'll need to carry spare tubes, a tubeless kit, and enough food and water to support yourself, so a frame or bar bag is advised.

Can I attend as a solo rider?

Absolutely! Around 95% of all our Escape riders come on their own. Making new friendships is a big part of our Escapes.

How do shared rooms work?

1. We do not mix males and females in shared rooms (unless booked as a couple or on request by both parties)

2. All rooms are twin beds, with en suite bathrooms

3. Rooms are allocated at random, unless booked as pairs or couples.

4. We can allocate rooms to friends on request (email us once booked)

5. If we have one single female, on a trip of 10 male riders, the female will be given a single room, to avoid sharing with a male (unless requested). Likewise, if we have a trip with 10 females, a solo male will be given a single room.

6. 95% of our guests come as solo riders. Making new friendships is a big part of our Escapes.

Can I have a Single Room?

A single room is available with a supplement of £500. Only a small number of single rooms are available on a first come, first served basis. To book a single room, select the single room option when booking online.

What support is available?

You will have 2-3 BoC ride guides on the road with you at all times. We'll ride with the group, and ensure no rider is left behind.

Our support van is also on the road with us at all times, which includes water, food, tools and more to provide nutrition and rescue support in the event of mechanicals or injury.

Is bike rental available?

We can help you to rent a road bike in all of our Escape Destinations.

We do not rent bikes ourselves, but we have recommended rental partners in each destination and we can assist in the rental, pickup and return of your bike.

Are meals included?

The Girona Escape includes daily breakfast, but excludes dinner. Why? Well, Girona has one of the best dining scenes of any location in Europe. So, for the first time, we're not including dinner at the hotel each night. Instead, we'll book recommended local restaurants for our group, so we can truly sample the amazing Catalan cuisine the area is famous for, and enjoy the beautiful old town to the full.

Lunch is not included, as we stop at a cafe mid way around each ride. A typical lunch stop will take 30-60 minutes, and you are free to eat/drink whatever you choose from our planned cafes.

Cancellations and Refunds

Please view our cancellation and refund policy. We offer a simple and flexible policy which allows you to simply transfer to any other future Escape (subject to availability) should you need to cancel.

Who is a typical Escape rider?

Our riders travel from all over the world. We've had riders from South America, Australia, Asia, North America and across Europe. usually very keen cyclists, most Escape riders are aged between 25 and 55, although we've had younger, and older too!

Most riders travel individually, but we've had small groups of friends, married couples, mother and daughter and father son combos too! Everyone is welcome on a BoC Escape in a fully inclusive and supportive group.

Can I bring a non riding partner?

You can bring a non riding partner. We offer a discount of £150 from the total cost for a non rider. This discount is applied to the final balance invoice, so book your spaces by paying the deposit in full for the number of places you require. We discount the £150 from the final balance which is due 16 weeks before the Escape.
